Old Hickory Beefalo Farm – Featured Vendor – We are very happy to announce we now have grassfed beefalo by the pound here at Tip’n the Mitten! Local farmers, the Jacksons, have joined the Tip’n the Mitten family and we couldn’t be happier! These cattle are a low-fat option for those of us who enjoy our red meat!

So what is Beefalo? Well, it is a hybrid. To be specific, beefalo is a cross between a bison and a domestic cow. True beefalo are 3/8 bison. As they are mostly cow, they do look like cows however, they retain what are considered the “favorable” characteristics of bison.  They tend to be very hardy in both cold and heat and are very good at converting what they eat into protein. 

The Jacksons obviously love farming and love being able to offer people access to high quality, healthy meat choices. From their flyer:

“Old Hickory Beefalo Farm LLC follows the same principles of biological farming to keep the environment clean and soil healthy. Our beefalo Do NOT receive any grain. We believe in our grass fed and grass finished only program. We feed high quality hay during winter and finish our animals on grass/pasture using an intensive rotational grazing system. This creates a higher quality product with lower fat, cholesterol and calories than grain fed cattle. Grass fed animals also have higher levels of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and a more favorable Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio. We use no antibiotics, growth hormones or chemical steroids. “

• Saturated Fat – 2.04 g per serving (beef 6.91)

Old Hickory Farm processes their meat following USDA standards making them able to sell here at our stores!
